Happy Samoan Language Week!
This week we celebrated Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa by creating our very own siapo. A siapo is a special Samoan mat, also known as a tapa cloth.
We looked at lots of different siapo designs and talked about the commonly used patterns and what they represent. We noticed that flowers were used a lot in Samoan art, particularly frangipani and hibiscus. Other patterns are inspired by leaves, animals and the ocean.
Here we are, presenting our finished siapo at our Samoan Language Week assembly for the whole school to see. We are very proud of our work and enjoyed learning about such a beautiful culture.
A special thank you to Mrs Falefa, our amazing learning assistant, for sharing her knowledge of Samoan culture with us.
That is very creative - Bailey
ReplyDeleteIt's very cool how you did that, it would have been exciting to do that - Harris
We have been learning how to do plaits - Tylar
We like all of your patterns - Hunter
It must have taken hard work to do that - Jayce
You have got nice pictures to share - Jack
Are they made out of sticks?
Was it easy?
Did you make them with cardboard?
Hello Room 4. Thank you for the comment. We made our patterns with paper, pastels and dye. Some of us thought it was easy but some of us thought it was challenging. If we found it hard we kept going and tried our best. This is why being resilient is one of our school values. Do you think you will try this? Or have you done any art work you could share?
DeleteKia ora Harris Class,
Deletewe are your blogging buddies at Makauri School in Gisborne.
YEs - we have done more art.
You have seen our Monet "Bridge" art.
We have added our Poppy art to the Monet art slides. Maybe you could take a look.

Talofa lava Harris Class,
ReplyDeleteWe really love the patterns in the siapo that you created. The bottom picture is awesome! In Tuffery Class we also explored creating siapo patterns. We are wondering how you put your artwork together and what materials did you use for your siapo?

Talofa Harris Class. We loved your work because the designs were so colourful. These pictures reminded us of our siapo designs. Could you explain how you created your patterns so that other people can try? Thank you for sharing. From Rae Class.
