Diwali Crafts

Kia ora bloggers!

As promised (on our last blog post), here are some snaps of the Diwali crafts we made last week. Miss Nodder shared four different videos or four different crafts for us to choose from. Most of us decided to make diyas and lanterns.

Happy Diwali!

Happy Diwali, bloggers!

In recognition of this special celebration the majority of our distance learning tasks have been focused around Diwali. We learnt about what Diwali is, as well as why and how it is celebrated. We're very lucky to have a few experts in our class who were able to share their knowledge with the rest of us. From there we were able to make connections between Diwali and the special celebrations in our own cultures - we were surprised to note so many similarities between the different cultures in our class! A few of us also made our very own Diwali crafts. (Photos to come, watch this space).

Two of our wonderful Hay Park students even dressed up in their beautiful cultural outfits for the special occasion. Check them out in the photos below!

'Would you rather...' Wednesday - Term 4, Week 2

Talofa lava learners!

I thought we would try something a bit different for today's distance learning writing task - instead of answering this week's 'Would you rather...' question on a Google Doc or a piece of paper, we are going to use our class blog.

That's a Wrap!

Kia ora bloggers!

Here in New Zealand it is the last day of the school term. To celebrate this, as well as making it through six and a half weeks of lockdown and distance learning, we held a Fancy Dress Friday Google Meet party! Some of us wore costumes and others wore their favourite outfit. We played games and had a dance party, and Mr Morris, who dressed up as Elvis Presley, even did a performance and sang one of Elvis' songs to us! It was a great way to finish off what has been a very difficult term.

We'd like to say another big BIG thank you to our families for helping us with our learning over the last few weeks - we couldn't have done it without you. 😊

And for those of you who are in New Zealand, have a wonderful holiday and cross your fingers for us here in Auckland who are hoping to move down to alert level 2 next week. 🀞🀞

Catch ya next term! 😎

Krisha's Cat Pencil Case

Kia ora bloggers!

We hope you're well, wherever you are in the world. 😊

This week Miss Nodder introduced us to Tock's Lockdown Toilet Roll Competition where we were set the challenge of designing and making something out of the materials around our house. We could make anything we wanted but it had to include at least one empty toilet roll or paper towel roll.

One super creative Hansen Class student rose to the challenge and created a cat pencil case almost entirely out of toilet rolls! Not only is it creative but it's practical too!

If you would like to help Krisha win the competition, all you need to do is open the link below and click on the big green voting button underneath Krisha's picture. Krisha, and the rest of Hansen Class, would definitely appreciate your vote. 😊

Good luck Krisha!

Another Day, Another Distance Learning Task

Kia ora bloggers!

We hope you've had a great start to the week.

With Auckland still in lockdown we're continuing to work away at our distance learning tasks. Here are some of the latest pieces of work we've sent through to Miss Nodder. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as she did. 😊

Another big thank you to our families for supporting us with our learning while we are at home.

Cooper's Creation

Happy Monday, Bloggers! 😊

We hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend and is ready for a week of learning!

As mentioned in our previous post, last week was Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). Our final task to celebrate was to read and retell the story of Maui and the Sun. We read the story to someone in our lockdown bubble, identified the main events from the story and then retold the story in our own words. We even learnt some new kupu Māori (Māori words) that we could use in our retells.

One superstar Hansen Class student went one step further with this task and made his own diorama to represent the Maui and the Sun story. How clever, creative and COOL is that?! Ka pai to mahi (good work), Cooper! πŸ‘

Distance Learning Continues

Kia ora koutou!

Here in Auckland we're into our fourth week of lockdown. It's starting to get very hard and some of us are missing school a LOT! Fortunately, we can still communicate and learn through the wonderful world of technology! 😊

Hansen Class have been busy busy, meeting every morning through Google Meet and completing lots of distance learning tasks. Take a look at what we've been up to on the slide deck below.

A big thank you to our families for helping us with our learning while we are at home.

Happy Father's Day!

Kia ora bloggers!

Earlier this month we celebrated Father's Day! Because we're still in lockdown, and can't go out to the shops, we had to get creative with our Father's Day gifts.

Check out some of the awesome cards we made for our dads. 😊

Life at Level 4

Kia ora bloggers!

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has made it's way to New Zealand's shores so we are currently in level 4 lockdown. This means that we have returned to distance learning.

One of our fabulous Hansen Class writers has written an acrostic poem about life at alert level 4. He's done an amazing job, coming up with sentences that begin with the letters of LOCKDOWN, as well as making sure that each sentence is relevant to the topic - well done Utu! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

Lock the doors.
Our streets are empty.
Cooking at home.
Keep away from people.
Don't go near anyone.
Online learning.
Wear a face mask.
Now it's level 4.

Cultures in our Classroom - Pasifika

Kia ora bloggers!

This term we are looking at the cultures in our classroom. The past two weeks have been dedicated to looking at the Pasifika cultures; Tongan, Samoan, Niuean and Cook Islands Māori. We have been using dual language texts to explore the languages of these cultures during shared reading.

On the third day of reading our dual language stories we looked at the keywords that would help us order and sequence the events from the stories. We then matched these keywords with the Tongan and Samoan translations and the illustrations from the books. Next, we sequenced the story in English and then in Tongan and Samoan. We used the original matching activities to help us identify the keywords in the sentences.

We are so lucky that some of our classmates speak Samoan and Tongan and could read the stories to us and help us pronounce the new words we were learning (Thank you Renesmee, Xayvion, Utu and Line! πŸ˜ƒ).

Here's some pictures of us working together to complete the tasks, as well as of our finished work.

What languages can you speak? Do you do any activities like this in your class? We'd love to hear about them!

Planting Succulents

Namaste bloggers!

Each year our school runs a stall at our local community day and every class makes something to sell at our stall. Unfortunately, because of the uncertainty around alert levels, we did not have the time to make our items this year. However, our class went ahead and made our items later in the term and we got to keep them for ourselves. 😊

We decided to make planter pots and plant succulent clippings in them. Here are a few snaps and some stories we wrote about how we planted them.

Planting

On Monday we planted plants. First, Miss Nodder buddied us up. Then we went outside so that we wouldn't make a big mess. First, we put some soil in the pot. We had to fill the pot to half way. Then we put the plant in our pot. I wanted to carefully plant it.

Happy Easter!

 Talofa lava bloggers!

We're a little bit late to the party but HAPPY EASTER! 😁🐰We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend.

Before we went off on our Easter break we got stuck into creating some Easter art. Our focus was on identifying and drawing shapes, as well as improving our scissor skills. We found it quite tricky to cut out the circles but we're very proud of the work we produced.

Let us know what you think! 😊

MOTAT Trip

Kia ora bloggers!

Earlier this term we took a trip to MOTAT! MOTAT is the Museum of Transport and Technology located here in Auckland.

Here are a few photos and some recounts we wrote about our trip.

MOTAT

On Wednesday I went  to  MOTAT. I saw the robot face. My buddy was Xayvion.

Our MOTAT Trip

On Wednesday I went to MOTAT with my school. First, we went on the tram. I had never been on a tram before so I was very excited. Next, we went to the skeleton and the robots. After that, we went and made calls on the old phones in the telephone room.

MOTAT

Yesterday I went to MOTAT. I went there on a bus. I went with my school. First, my group went on a tram and that was my first time on a tram. I was a bit nervous. I think we went there so we could learn about new things. Next, we went to a pink building. After that, we went to a playground because there was a playground next to the pink building and we wanted to play. There was another building next to the pink building and that was the building that had robots. Lastly, my group went to the fire engine.

Lockdown Learning

Kia ora bloggers,

Welcome to the Hansen Class blog! 😁

Unfortunately we've had a bit of a rocky start to the year, with two lockdowns within the first four weeks of school, BUT we are proving to be incredibly resilient learners as we continue our learning from home.

Here are some photos of the work we have done and sent to Miss Nodder.

Enjoy! 😊

These are stories we wrote about the things we cherish.

These are drawings of things we saw while out on a walk with our families. Miss Nodder challenged us to pay close attention to our surroundings and draw the things we remember seeing on our walk when we got home.

Here are some recounts we wrote about a science experiment we had a go at.
