As you know we've been learning about plants and trees this term. To wrap up this learning we created some spring tree-inspired artwork using a rolled paper technique. Check them out below!

This term we have been learning about plants and what they need to be able to grow and thrive. We learned that they need soil, water, air, sunlight and space. We are conducting a special science experiment to see what happens if we withhold some of these things when growing plants from seeds.

We love Greedy Cat here in Arapere Class. Earlier in the year, we read Greedy Cat's Door and had a go at writing a retell of the story. We also made some Greedy Cats of our own using a collaging technique.

Last term we were lucky enough to visit the All Blacks Experience. We had a great time learning about some of the All Black's history as well as how they prepare themselves for games.
Our favourite part was when we got to have a go at some of the skills the All Blacks work hard to perfect such as passing, kicking, and line-outs. If you haven't already been we'd definitely recommend it.

This week in Arapere Class we have been learning lots of new Samoan words for the items around our classroom, like tusi (book), penitala (pencil), seleulu (scissors) and many more. We have also been lucky enough to try some traditional Samoan dishes like koko Samoa and kokoalaisa, thanks to our wonderful Learning Assistants, Mrs Falefa and Miss Taua.
To end our week we designed and made our very own Samoan ili (fan) - not very useful with the weather the way it is at the moment, we admit, but they'll certainly come in handy when the weather warms up again. Here's an ata (photo) of our finished work.

As promised (on our last blog post), here are some snaps of the Diwali crafts we made last week. Miss Nodder shared four different videos or four different crafts for us to choose from. Most of us decided to make diyas and lanterns.
In recognition of this special celebration the majority of our distance learning tasks have been focused around Diwali. We learnt about what Diwali is, as well as why and how it is celebrated. We're very lucky to have a few experts in our class who were able to share their knowledge with the rest of us. From there we were able to make connections between Diwali and the special celebrations in our own cultures - we were surprised to note so many similarities between the different cultures in our class! A few of us also made our very own Diwali crafts. (Photos to come, watch this space).

Here in New Zealand it is the last day of the school term. To celebrate this, as well as making it through six and a half weeks of lockdown and distance learning, we held a Fancy Dress Friday Google Meet party! Some of us wore costumes and others wore their favourite outfit. We played games and had a dance party, and Mr Morris, who dressed up as Elvis Presley, even did a performance and sang one of Elvis' songs to us! It was a great way to finish off what has been a very difficult term.
We'd like to say another big BIG thank you to our families for helping us with our learning over the last few weeks - we couldn't have done it without you. ๐
And for those of you who are in New Zealand, have a wonderful holiday and cross your fingers for us here in Auckland who are hoping to move down to alert level 2 next week. ๐ค๐ค

This week Miss Nodder introduced us to Tock's Lockdown Toilet Roll Competition where we were set the challenge of designing and making something out of the materials around our house. We could make anything we wanted but it had to include at least one empty toilet roll or paper towel roll.
One super creative Hansen Class student rose to the challenge and created a cat pencil case almost entirely out of toilet rolls! Not only is it creative but it's practical too!

Here in Auckland we're into our fourth week of lockdown. It's starting to get very hard and some of us are missing school a LOT! Fortunately, we can still communicate and learn through the wonderful world of technology! ๐

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has made it's way to New Zealand's shores so we are currently in level 4 lockdown. This means that we have returned to distance learning.
One of our fabulous Hansen Class writers has written an acrostic poem about life at alert level 4. He's done an amazing job, coming up with sentences that begin with the letters of LOCKDOWN, as well as making sure that each sentence is relevant to the topic - well done Utu! ๐๐
Lock the doors.
Our streets are empty.
Cooking at home.
Keep away from people.
Don't go near anyone.
Online learning.
Wear a face mask.
Now it's level 4.

This term we are looking at the cultures in our classroom. The past two weeks have been dedicated to looking at the Pasifika cultures; Tongan, Samoan, Niuean and Cook Islands Mฤori. We have been using dual language texts to explore the languages of these cultures during shared reading.
On the third day of reading our dual language stories we looked at the keywords that would help us order and sequence the events from the stories. We then matched these keywords with the Tongan and Samoan translations and the illustrations from the books. Next, we sequenced the story in English and then in Tongan and Samoan. We used the original matching activities to help us identify the keywords in the sentences.
We are so lucky that some of our classmates speak Samoan and Tongan and could read the stories to us and help us pronounce the new words we were learning (Thank you Renesmee, Xayvion, Utu and Line! ๐).

Each year our school runs a stall at our local community day and every class makes something to sell at our stall. Unfortunately, because of the uncertainty around alert levels, we did not have the time to make our items this year. However, our class went ahead and made our items later in the term and we got to keep them for ourselves. ๐
We decided to make planter pots and plant succulent clippings in them. Here are a few snaps and some stories we wrote about how we planted them.
