The Floor is Lava!

On Monday we wrote about volcanoes and it was all about what we knew about volcanoes. We described what a volcanic eruption is like. We all had to use fun, exciting words not boring words.

It was fun because every single volcano picture was amazing and we tried our best.

It was hard to think  of interesting words.

Our next steps are to publish our lovely writing and hang it up and maybe it can go in the newsletter.

Cook Islands Language Week

Kia orāna bloggers!

Pe'ea 'ua koe?

We hope you've all had a great week learning about and celebrating Cook Islands Language Week.

Here in Harris Class we learnt how to say some common phrases in Cook Islands Māori and we focussed this week's art on the tiare flower, which is the national flower of the Cook Islands. We also hosted a whole school assembly to celebrate all of the wonderful learning that has been going on in our school.

What did you learn about the Cook Islands this week?

Happy Matariki!

Kia ora bloggers!

Check out some of the Matariki art that we completed at the end of Term 2. We're very proud of our efforts and really enjoyed learning about the Māori New Year.

What did your class do to mark this special time of the year?

These artworks were inspired by the story The Little Kiwi's Matariki.

We were lucky enough to have the fabulous Mrs B in our class while Miss Nodder was away for a few days. We made our very own Matariki stars and did some weaving too.

Amazing Animations!

Kia ora bloggers!

We were inspired by our Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu buddies at Makauri School. Check out their awesome animations on their blog.

So we decided to make our own animations using Explain Everything.

Here is Rayyan's...

And here is Krisha's

What do you like about our animations? Is there anything you think we could improve on?

Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa

Happy Samoan Language Week!

This week we celebrated Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa by creating our very own siapo. A siapo is a special Samoan mat, also known as a tapa cloth.

We looked at lots of different siapo designs and talked about the commonly used patterns and what they represent. We noticed that flowers were used a lot in Samoan art, particularly frangipani and hibiscus. Other patterns are inspired by leaves, animals and the ocean.

Here we are, presenting our finished siapo at our Samoan Language Week assembly for the whole school to see. We are very proud of our work and enjoyed learning about such a beautiful culture.

A special thank you to Mrs Falefa, our amazing learning assistant, for sharing her knowledge of Samoan culture with us.

Distance Learning - Week 5

This term we are exploring the concept of diversity. We're starting this unit of work off by finding out about ourselves and our own cultures.

One of our distance learning tasks this week was to make a 'discovery box' of things that represent who we are and where we come from. A discovery box is a collection of items that represent a person, place or thing.

Here are some of discovery boxes. Let us know what you think! 😊

Axel's Samoan discovery box
Anoosha's Pakistan discovery box
Tameer's Muslim discovery box
